Question by Yu Gi Freak: Field Turf. Pros and Cons?
A bit about myself. I am an all-rounded sports fan; I watch baseball, hockey, and basketball, and a little bit of football. Surprisingly, I know very little about the pros/cons of field-turf.

Here’s what I understand so far:
Natural Grass
- good: suppose to be the “best” environment for athletes –> the least damaging
- bad: requires a lot of maintenance (ex. watering)

Astroturf
- good: inexpensive and requires little maintenance
- bad: because it is so cheap, it is really damage to athletes

Field-turf
- an artificial turf, but it’s better than astroturf –> that’s all I know

I tried researching more about field-turf (http://www.fieldturf.com/artificial-turf… but I don’t quite understand their explanation of what makes field-turf good? For example, I have absolutely no idea what is cryogenic rubber, or how their patented infill “protects muscles and joints”.

In a simplified explanation, can someone explain to me:
1) What makes field-turf better than Astroturf?
2) How does field-turf compare to natural grass? The website claims that they are “equal”.

Again I am looking at this question solely based from an athlete’s perspective. I don’t care that it makes for a great looking lawn at home. I want to know how it benefits the professional athletes (ex. Soccer players, baseball players, football players, etc.)

I added the same question in the baseball, football, soccer posts.

pros: you wont slip around on turf and your jersey wont get all muddy, and easier to take care of.

cons: you have no excuse for slipping if you do.

John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airport Chooses Innovative Air FieldTurf Synthetic Turf for Runways and Taxiways

New York, NY (Vocus) November 22, 2010

FieldTurf, the worldwide leader in sports surfacing and landscaping solutions, was selected by John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport earlier this year to equip areas around the approach runways and taxiways with 300,000 square feet of Air FieldTurf™ synthetic turf. The Air FieldTurf installation at JFK International Airport has since been completed.

The Air FieldTurf system is renowned for improving security, maintenance, and durability involved with airside groundcover.

“We are very pleased that areas around the approach runways and taxiways at JFK International Airport are outfitted with our innovative Air FieldTurf artificial turf,” said FieldTurf President Eric Daliere. “Just as many high profile airports around the world are benefitting from a revolutionary FieldTurf groundcover system, so will JFK International Airport. Our aviation-grade artificial turf’s patented properties make it the smart investment for any airport around the globe.”

The Air FieldTurf technological innovation is one of only two systems approved by the United States Federal Aviation Administration per applicable standards and advisory circulars. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Advisory Circular No: 150/5370-15A – Airside Applications for Artificial Turf.

JFK Airport joins Boston Logan, US Marine Air Base: Miramar, Charles de Gaulle, San Francisco International and Hong Kong International Airports as just some of the world’s major airports to opt for Air FieldTurf’s aviation-grade artificial turf.

Air FieldTurf’s patented aviation turf system contributes to improved visibility, a reduced opportunity for foreign object debris, a mitigated risk from wildlife and the improved drainage and maintenance of the surface.

  1. Field turf is some string of rubber and some tiny rubber balls, this makes it softer then astro turf which is basically a carpet on some concrete, field turf will give some nasty turf burns, though it is even more common with astro turf.

In soccer field turf fields are faster then grass fields, but may be preferred in areas with bad climates and the ball doesn’t take any strange bounces as it does on a grass field.

In football it is now mainly used by teams playing in domes that does not have a retractable grass surface. and may be preferred because of its durability, same for baseball.

Field turf is more bouncy then natural grass, and it gives some nasty turf burns, but speed wise they should be pretty equal.

  2. Field turf is also called Next-Turf. this turf is much longer than astro turf. astro turf is more of a carpet, almost like the surface used in a mini-golf course. it is extremely short and low, and it can be damaging to athletes like you said, causing a lot of turf-burn from falling and sliding on it. imagine a rug burn, moving at 15 mph. to the best of my knowledge, astro turf fields are no longer being made and all the new turf fields are next turf…next-turf was created to resemble a more realistic replica of grass. i am a senior in high school and have played football and baseball on all 3 types of fields. i would definitely prefer next-turf or natural grass over any astro turf. if i had to choose, i would pick natural grass on a dry day over anything if it can be well kept and maintained. next turf isnt bad though, and the plus to it is it will never get muddy or torn up. also, its painted once and never again. basically, its always in perfect condition. lines, yard markers, logos etc. must be repainted nearly every week or before each game for natural grass. one downside to next turf is if you are playing a game in the rain, if you dont use the right cleats or spikes, you will feel like your ice-skating. picture metal spikes on wet plastic, thats pretty much what it is. just need to prepare for the weather. also, it will take a week or so after playing a game on any turf to get the little rubber chunks out of your cleats. these are under the green “grass” in the turf to make it more of a soft surface and soften falls to the ground
